Roblox Revenue Reaches $750 Million on Mobile as Tencent Tie-Up Clears Way for Chinese Launch
Massively multiplayer world building game Roblox inched a step closer to launching in China this week as Roblox Corporation announced a strategic partnership with Tencent that will facilitate the title’s eventual release there. At the same time, Sensor Tower Store Intelligence estimates confirm that mobile player spending in the title has surpassed $750 million, with revenue in May set for year-over-year growth of 50 percent.
Roblox mobile player spending in May is on track to reach an estimated $36 million worldwide, compared to $24 million during the same month in 2018. That puts the title’s average daily spending on mobile for the month at nearly $1.2 million. During May 2018, the average was approximately $774,000.
The game’s life-to-date take of $750 million has come primarily from players in the United States, who have contributed 67 percent or approximately $503 million of the total. Its second largest market, Great Britain, is a distant second in terms of revenue share at about 9 percent or $67.5 million.
To put the title’s mobile revenue into perspective, its total is about 50 percent more than the $500 million Minecraft has grossed on the App Store and Google Play since 2014.
Roblox was the No. 21 mobile app overall for global revenue across both stores in April, when it grossed approximately $37 million, slightly more than its projected worldwide total for May.
